Disposal of biomedical waste is an environmental concern, as many medical wastes are classified as infectious or biohazardous and could potentially lead to the spread of infectious disease. The most common danger for humans is the infection which also affects other living organisms in the region. Daily exposure to the waste (landfill) leads to accumulation of harmful substances or microbes in the person’s body.

Biomedical waste must be properly managed and disposed of to protect the environment, general public and workers, especially healthcare and sanitation workers who are at risk of exposure to biomedical waste as an occupational hazard. 

Biomedical waste should be collected in containers that are leak-proof and sufficiently strong to prevent breakage during handling. Containers of biomedical waste are marked with a biohazard symbol. Biomedical Waste Containers (Non Sharps Waste)

The following are the minimum standards for a single-use and reusable biomedical waste containers, other than a container for sharps waste.

Single Use Biomedical Waste Containers

The container consists of:

  1. an unlined rigid and leak-proof plastic drum or pail, or
  2. an outer cardboard container that can be sealed and is lined with a liner made of a leak-proof plastic film that can be securely tied.

The container must also be:

  1. capable of withstanding the weight of the biomedical waste without tearing, cracking, crushing, breaking or otherwise allowing the accidental release or discharge of the waste, and
  2. colour coded and clearly marked. 
Reusable Biomedical Waste Containers

A container that is:

  1. fabricated of a puncture resistant and leak proof material that can be cleaned and disinfected prior to reuse,
  2. capable of withstanding the weight of the biomedical waste without tearing, cracking, crushing, breaking or otherwise allowing the accidental release or discharge of the waste, and
  3. is visually inspected for tears, cracks, breaks or leaks every time it is emptied.
